We’ve gone nuts!

The American chestnut was once one of the predominant trees at Lake Hopatcong until being destroyed by a great blight over a century ago. A well-known area of the lake is still known as Chestnut Point.

As we began restoring the former Lake Hopatcong Station as our new home, we became interested in the possibility of bringing back chestnut trees to the native gardens being developed on the property. In cooperation with The American Chestnut Foundation, five blight-resistant seedlings were hand delivered in September 2016.  All five trees have flourished over the past five years and last week the first nuts appeared!
